Professor Sheridan Blau

Professor Sheridan Blau is Professor of Practice in the Teaching of English and the former Director (2010-2016) of the Programme in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is also Professor of English and Education (Emeritus) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he taught for 40 years before his retirement. Professor Blau has had decades of experience as a teacher-educator, both as long-time head of the English teacher education programme at UCSB and as the Director for over 30 years of one of the earliest sites of the National Writing Project. From 1997 to 1998, he was President of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and was later awarded the NCTE Distinguished Service Award in 2007 for his professional leadership, contributions to teaching, and exemplary writing. Professor Blau is the multiple award-winning author of numerous books, most notably The Literature Workshop (2003), which won the 2004 Richard Meade Award for outstanding research in English education. In his limited spare time, he is a studio potter.
